Mahi-Mahi Madness: Why Summer Is the Best Time to Fish Off South Florida

June is one of the most exciting months to be on the water off Pompano Beach and Boynton Beach. The Gulf Stream is warm, the seas are flat, and one of the most electrifying fish in the ocean is showing up in force: mahi-mahi. Whether you call them dolphin fish, dorado, or just "the most beautiful thing I've ever caught," these fish are putting on a show right now — and we want to take you out to see it firsthand.
Summer = Mahi Season in South Florida
From June through August, warm Gulf Stream currents push massive schools of mahi-mahi along the South Florida coastline. These fish are highly migratory, riding the edges of the Gulf Stream and clustering around floating debris, weed lines, and baitfish schools just a few miles offshore. That means you don't have to travel far to find them — and when you do, the action can be absolutely wild. It's not uncommon to catch 10, 15, or even 20 mahi-mahi in a single trip during peak summer season.
What makes mahi special isn't just the numbers — it's the entire experience. They hit hard, run fast, and jump repeatedly before tiring out. Their electric green and gold coloring is unlike anything else in the ocean. And once they're in the box? Mahi-mahi is one of the best-eating fish you can pull out of South Florida waters. Fresh mahi tacos, anyone?
How Captain Brad Finds the Fish
Mahi are structure fish. Captain Brad knows exactly what to look for — color changes where warm blue Gulf Stream water meets cooler green water, floating sargassum weed lines, debris, circling birds. Any of these can signal a mahi bonanza just below the surface. We troll lures and rigged ballyhoo baits along these features, covering ground until the rods start bending. When the bite turns on, it can go from quiet to chaos in seconds.
